133 places

Somewhere on this list is a place that fits.

No city carries a fixed character. The lines that cross it are different for every person born, so open one, and see what it does with your sky.

In short

There is no best city, and this page is not a ranking. Which of your forty lines reach a place depends on one arrangement of the sky that has never repeated, the one over you at birth, so the same city is a different answer for two people born days apart. Each page below describes what a place is: how far north it sits, how much of the sky rises and sets there, and how many of the forty lines can physically reach it. The personal half takes about a minute and runs on your own device.

Why latitude decides what a city can even be told

Before any birth chart is involved, a city’s distance from the equator sets a hard limit on which lines can exist there at all. It is the one fact on every city page that is true for every reader.

Near the equator, everything reaches

Within about 23° of the equator every one of the ten bodies rises and sets, so all forty lines are drawable. 132 of the 133 cities here sit in that band. A reading for one of them is never short of anything for geometric reasons, if a line is missing, it is missing because it is nowhere near you.

Further north or south, lines start to run out

Past that, a body far enough from the celestial equator stops rising and setting altogether, it is circumpolar, permanently up or permanently down. Its Ascendant and Descendant lines do not run faint there; they end. Midheaven and Imum Coeli lines are meridians and run pole to pole regardless, so the loss is always the horizon half.

Which is why a gap is an answer

Older software clamps the maths so a line is drawn everywhere. That produces a tidier map and a false one. Every city page here states its own limit as a figure the greatest declination a body can have and still rise there, and where a line cannot exist we leave the space empty and say why.

Every city, by country

Each page carries the place’s own facts, what its most common lines tend to ask, and the reading module so you can see which of yours actually land there.

Questions

Questions people ask

Where the honest answer is unhelpful to us, it is still the one printed.

  1. Which city is best for astrocartography?

None of them, and the question does not have a general answer. A city has no fixed character, it has a relationship with one particular birth chart. Two people born days apart get different readings for the same place, and for most readers most cities are quiet ground. Any list that ranks cities without knowing when you were born is ranking something that does not exist.

  2. How were these cities chosen?

The list is the shipped gazetteer: 133 places, 69 of them the hubs people planning a move actually weigh against each other. Every one is a real coordinate pair rather than a name, because a chart cast for the wrong Springfield is not a rougher version of the right answer, it is a different one.

  3. Can every planetary line reach every city on this list?

No. 132 of the 133 sit low enough that all ten bodies rise and set there, so all forty lines are drawable. Further from the equator, a body far enough from the celestial equator becomes circumpolar and never rises or sets at all, its Ascendant and Descendant lines genuinely stop before the city. We leave that gap rather than drawing a line across it.

  4. What if my city is not here?

The reading still works. These pages are written for the places people most often compare, but the tool resolves any town by name, and anything not already built into the page is looked up by name alone with nothing else attached to it.

Your own map

Which of these are on your lines?

Enter the day, the hour and the town you were born in. Most of this list will be quiet ground for you, that is the usual shape of a chart, and the map says so rather than finding something to report everywhere.
